Technical Support

We have a team that is dedicated to providing Moodle technical support to schools across the U.K. Technical support is offered online using screen sharing software that allows our team to see your screen, so any issue can be easily resolved. We also offer technical support via e-mail and telephone.

If you encounter a problem with Moodle not doing what it is supposed to do, or you want to know the best way to perform a certain task or achieve a certain result, install some additional activity modules or blocks, or even simply change the colour scheme and logo to better match your other sites or organisational style, then we can help.

If you'd like assistance with any aspect of Moodle, please don't hesitate to call one of our advisors on 0800 862 0131.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should I upload users into my Moodle?

First you need to create a CSV file with 5 Columns:
firstname
lastname
username
password
email

Its best to concatenate the "firstname" field with the students year of leaving e.g. 2010-John. This is so that teachers can filter between different users when assigning them to courses.

Finally you need to upload this file by following the path below:
In Moodle, go to Admin > Users > Accounts > Upload Users, browse for your CSV file and then upload.

What does Moodle and SIMS/CMIS integration achieve?

Parents have their own automatically created account which allows them to see attendance data on their children
Automated user account generation and synchronisation. SIMS data will populate user accounts in Moodle and will automatically update when a change is made in SIMS

Automatic creation and maintenance of Moodle courses via linking with SIMS groups

Attendance records and timetables are available for parents to view.

What will future developments of SIMS/CMIS integration achieve?

Assessments, certification, reporting and behavioural data will all be available in Moodle

Instant SMS system will bridge the gap between schools and parents. If a child misses a class or school, an instant text message will alert the parents.

What are the advantages of having an In-School Moodle?

Lower ongoing hosting/subscription costs
Pages load 2-3 times faster
Reduced load on your internet connection
If the internet connection fails, Moodle is still accessible
Moodle can be integrated with internal services e.g. Active Directory for single sign on

How easy is it to edit my Moodle?

At any time you can go back and edit a resource or an activity that you have created in Moodle by using the "update" option (ensure your editing is turned on). If you have uploaded a document to the Moodle files section you wish to change you will not be able to edit this in Moodle, instead please make the change locally and then re-upload the file. If you don't immediately see the changes, you may need to empty your cache/history in your web browser by pressing Ctrl and F5 on your keyboard.

How easy is it to move things in my Moodle?

Resources and Activities in courses can be moved about at will. Turn your editing on and click the double arrow icon to the right of the desired resource/activity/block. Once you've clicked the double arrow icon your screen will change and you will see several blank boxes. Click on the blank box where you wish to move your resource/activity/block.

Can I put audio files in my Moodle?

Yes, audio files can be easily uploaded into Moodle like any other file resource. You should ensure that the files have been recorded or re-encoded as MP3 files as Moodle contains a built-in player for MP3 files.

Can I put video files in my Moodle?

Yes. As video files can be large you are strongly recommended to encode video files in Flash Video format:
Video Converter

Can I upload multiple files to Moodle at the same time?

You can upload several files to Moodle at once if you use zip. Zip the files on your computer and upload the zip file to your Moodle course. In your course sites files in Moodle, you will see an "unzip" option next to the file. This can be used to transfer (for example) whole websites into Moodle.

What's the best way to assign students to courses?

There are many ways of enrolling students on courses. Many schools are not only interested in simply enrolling students, but are also keen to group students in their teaching groups. Integrating your moodle with your school's MIS system provides the most efficient way of enrolling teaching groups onto moodle courses.

If you choose not to take on the optional extra of MIS integration, the next best way of enrolling students (keeping them in their teaching groups) is to use enrolment keys. In short, the students enrol themselves into the appropriate teaching group by giving their teaching group's password (group enrolment key). To achieve this an arbitrary course enrolment key is created (NB. This is not given to the students and simply activates the use of enrolment keys for those attempting to access the course). In the course groups, groups and group enrolment keys are created for each teaching group. The group enrolment keys are communicated to students.

In some schools (especially at primary level) it will not always be necessary to group students according to their teaching groups. In cases where classes are taught all subjects in one teaching group the easiest thing to do is to make categories per class/year group and then enrol the class on that category.
